The Serial Diagnostics system by Schmersal is designed to provide intelligent monitoring and communication for safety switchgear in industrial automation environments. Using the SD (Serial Diagnostic) interface, safety sensors, interlocks, and control devices can transmit detailed status and diagnostic information to higher-level control systems such as PLCs or safety controllers.
In this system, multiple safety devices are connected in series via a dedicated SD bus. The collected data is transmitted to a gateway or safety controller, which then forwards it to industrial fieldbus systems (such as PROFINET, EtherNet/IP, or Modbus) for centralized monitoring and analysis.
Unlike conventional wiring, Serial Diagnostics allows both safety signals and non-safety diagnostic data to be transmitted simultaneously, enabling operators to monitor device status, identify faults, and perform predictive maintenance.
The system supports series connection of up to 31 safety devices on a single line, significantly reducing wiring effort and installation costs while maintaining high safety performance.
